About Us

Our Mission Statement

Suncoast Basset Rescue is a not-for-profit all volunteer effort whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome stray, abandoned, shelter & owner surrender basset hounds just for the love of the breed. Our organization gives bassets a second chance to live, as they were intended as someone’s best friend.

Who We Are

Suncoast Basset Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing FL basset hounds. Founded in 1997, we have been in continuous existence for almost 30 years – that’s a lot of basset experience! Most of our dogs are owner surrenders, but others come from municipal shelters or other rescue partners. We give basset hounds a second chance to live as someone’s best friend — and we’ve been doing it one dog at a time, entirely through the efforts of volunteers.

How We Work

We are an all-volunteer organization with no physical facility. Every basset in our care is placed with a carefully screened foster or foster-to-adopt family. SBR underwrites and coordinates all medical care necessary to prepare a dog for adoption. Before approving any foster or adoptive placement, we conduct in-person home visits, vet reference checks, personal reference checks, and extensive interviews. If we wouldn’t be comfortable leaving our own dog in a home, we won’t place a rescue there.

In 2025 alone, we took in 100 dogs, provided for all of their medical needs, and found forever homes for 82 bassets.

Forever Fosters

Some bassets come to us with medical conditions, age-related needs, or behavioral histories that make traditional adoption a poor fit. These special dogs — our Forever Fosters — remain with us permanently, cared for by dedicated foster families who have opened their homes and hearts for the long haul.

Supported By

Suncoast Basset Rescue is proud to be supported by donations from hundreds of individual supporters, as well lifesaving grants from local and national organizations. We appreciate the confidence these donors have in our mission and work every day to maximize the impact of donations to help FL bassets in need. Your supports allows us to say “yes” to every FL basset in need, regardless of age or medical condition.

Board of Directors

Barbara Weber—President

I’ve been an SBR volunteer since 2016 after I found my first basset hound, Mimi, as a stray on the streets. I currently have 2 SBR bassets—Willie and Ella—both foster fails. I’ve worked in the animal field all my life and have a great passion for animal welfare. I worked as a primate keeper at Brookfield Zoo and as a zoological manager at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I’m recently retired and still trying to make a difference in the animal world—but now I’m doing it for dogs.

Chris Thomas—VP & Treasurer

I am a native Southern Californian who served in the Marine Corps, captained fishing boats and worked my way through USC. After working in Arthur Andersen’s audit group, I spent more than 30 years in the multi-unit restaurant industry. Our basset journey began in 2003 with a discarded runt puppy (Lady). I am retired and currently live with two SBR hounds— June & Gus—hounds number five and six.

Alysa Emden—Secretary

A life-long lover of basset hounds, I’m currently owned by three—Tobie, Jade & SBR alum Cooper. I am a retired attorney specializing in the taxation of nonprofit organizations and serve on the boards of several charities. Dogs and I split our time between FL and MA but are always working full-time for SBR!

Karen Young—Founder

I’m a retired nurse “gone to the dogs.” I’m also a certified veterinary technician. I’ve lived the majority of my life overseas. In 1997, I was approached by the Suncoast Basset Hound Club of Tampa to start a rescue. It takes a village, and here we are today finding homes for “Mother Nature’s clowns.”

Larry Little

I am the President of Guardian Angel Basset Rescue in Illinois and have been affiliated with SBR for over 20 years. My first contact with the group was with Karen Young when SBR was initially founded. I am honored to be able to help SBR accomplish my dream of “No Basset Left Behind”.
