Adopt a Basset Hound

Give a Hound a Second Chance

How Adoption Works

For the basset hound

For any dog, the rehoming process is a time of adjustment. Some of our intakes have never lived in a home before, while others have cycled through many homes. SBR takes in all bassets, regardless of age or medical condition, and places them with a dedicated foster family who provides individualized care. In many cases, these families are fostering to adopt; after a dog is medically cleared, the foster family will adopt them. In other cases, the dog may be in a more traditional foster situation and will be placed with a new forever family after being cleared for adoption. During the foster period, SBR underwrites all medical expenses, which may include a full medical and behavioral assessment, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, and additional treatment or training — to help every dog be healthy and ready to thrive in a new home.

For the adopter

The process begins with a completed adoption application. An adoption coordinator will reach out promptly to guide you through the next steps. We’ll take the time to understand your living situation, your experience with dogs, and what you’re looking for in a companion. We’ll also contact your veterinarian, check your personal references, and conduct conduct an in-person home visit.

Our goal is to find the right fit for both you and the dog. Many of the bassets we rescue have been through difficult circumstances, and it’s important to us that each one goes to a final forever home — a place where they can live in peace and happiness for the rest of their days. After adoption, we offer continued post-adoption support to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Thank you for considering adoption. By opening your home to a rescue basset, you’re giving a hound the second chance they deserve — and they’ll repay you with unconditional love and loyalty for years to come.
