At Suncoast Basset Rescue, we understand that there are times when rehoming a basset is the best option for both the dog and the family. While this can be a difficult and emotional decision, we are committed to making the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. We accept all basset hounds, and we also consider basset mixes that resemble a basset in appearance.
Step 1: Complete the Surrender Form
To begin the process, please complete the Surrender Form. We ask for basic information about your dog along with a recent photo.
Please complete all required fields before submitting the form. If you do not have certain information, please do not leave the field blank—simply enter “unknown” – otherwise the form won’t submit properly.
If you have a specific timeline for surrender, please be sure to indicate that on the form.
Step 2: Follow-Up Call
Once we receive your completed form and photo, a Suncoast Basset Rescue representative will contact you within 24 hours to arrange a follow-up call.
During this conversation, we will gather more detailed information about your dog, including background on behavior, medical history, and socialization. The information you provide is extremely important and helps us determine the most appropriate placement for your dog.
Step 3: Placement in a Foster Home
Your dog may be placed with one of our approved adopters, who will foster with the intent to adopt once the dog is cleared for adoption. Alternatively, your dog may be placed with one of our approved volunteer foster homes. In either case, please be assured that we have carefully vetted the home. Before approving a foster or adoptive family, we conduct in-person home visits, check vet references, check personal references, and conduct extensive interviews. If we wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving our dog in a home, we won’t place your dog in that home.
Step 4: Transport
Once we know where your dog is going, we provide all transportation – door to door. Our transporters are all volunteers who have applied, been interviewed and received instruction regarding safe and compassionate transport procedures.
Step 5: Medical & Behavioral Care
While in foster care—either through foster-to-adopt or a volunteer foster—Suncoast Basset Rescue will ensure that all medical needs are addressed. This includes:
- Vaccinations
- Heartworm testing and prevention
- Spaying or neutering
- Any additional necessary medical treatments
We also work closely with the foster family to address any behavioral concerns and help prepare the dog for a successful permanent placement.
Our Commitment
We truly appreciate you taking the time to learn about our surrender process. Thank you for trusting Suncoast Basset Rescue with your dog’s future. We will work hard to ensure your basset receives the care they need and the opportunity to find a loving, forever home.
