Meet Jake, a 3-year-old Basset Hound who has truly been given a second chance. Jake’s journey began at a veterinary clinic when his former owners requested euthanasia — a request the veterinarian compassionately refused. Instead, this dedicated vet stepped in to help Jake start over, providing him with needed medical care including neutering and vaccinations, and ensuring he was placed into a foster home. Jake has shown some resource guarding behaviors and has had incidents involving children, so we are seeking a home without children where he can feel safe and supported.

He will need a patient, experienced home that understands how to continue working with him and setting him up for success. Ideally, Jake would do best with an experienced Basset Hound adopter who understands the quirky, stubborn, and lovable traits the breed is known for. Jake is smart, confident, and always up for an adventure. The good news is that Jake gets along well with other dogs and has done well around cats, too.

He would thrive in a home with a securely fenced backyard where he can safely run, explore, and burn off some of his energy. If you think you can meet the needs of this handsome boy and provide him with the loving, stable home he deserves, we would love to hear from you.

Meet Maui! Maui is 5 years old and packs a whole lot of energy into a small package! This confident, social, and friendly guy loves being around people and gets along great with other dogs. In his forever home, Maui would do best with a fenced in yard and another active, playful pup to help keep him happy and stimulated.

Maui is also wonderful with cats and kids, making him a great fit for many types of families. Don’t let those short little legs fool you — this clever guy has mastered the art of counter surfing! He thrives with a consistent routine and is already crate trained, which helps set him up for success.

If you’re looking for a fun-loving, outgoing companion with a big personality in a compact basset package, Maui might just be your perfect match! 

Meet Franklin! This handsome hunk is 4.5 years old and full of charm. Franklin’s family has experienced several big life changes in a short period of time, including multiple moves and an illness involving a family member, which may have contributed to some recent uncertainty and changes in his behavior. What Franklin really needs now is stability, consistency, and a loving home where he can truly thrive.

Franklin has always enjoyed having a fenced yard where he can run, play, and stretch his legs — something that would make him very happy in his next home. He does wonderfully with other dogs and is extremely sociable with people. He’s polite, doesn’t jump, and has an adorable habit of gently nudging you with his paw when he’d like a little extra love and attention. Confident and outgoing, Franklin handles new situations well and is not skittish around unfamiliar people or dogs.

Like many dogs, Franklin can be a little protective of his favorite spots — especially cozy places like the couch — so he would do best with an adopter who understands dogs that sometimes like to “claim” special places and can provide gentle structure and guidance. With someone who appreciates his personality and gives him clear boundaries, Franklin will make a loyal, loving companion.

Franklin is now fully medically cleared and ready for adoption and is looking forward to finding the forever home where he can settle in and be part of the family.

We can’t believe this handsome, sweet boy Bowie is still waiting for his forever family! This beautiful soul has been with SBR for several months, and everyone who meets him falls in love. Bowie is a recently retired breeder dog who’s finally getting his chance at the good life. Surrendered to SBR, he’s only just beginning his journey toward becoming a cherished family member. He’s in excellent health, full of spunk, and has energy to spare—this boy is ready to enjoy life.

Like many dogs coming from a breeding environment, Bowie can be a little shy and unsure of the big world outside a kennel. But every day, his foster dad sees more and more of his wonderful personality shining through. With time to decompress and feel safe, he continues to blossom into the sweet, goofy, and loving boy he truly is. Bowie’s ideal forever home will have another friendly dog to help guide him and give him confidence. A fenced-in yard is also a must—he loves exploring safely and having space to run and play.

Bowie has now completed his wellness check and neuter, and he is fully cleared for adoption. This sweet boy is officially ready to find his perfect forever home, where he can enjoy the comfort, love, and belly rubs he’s been waiting for.

Meet Bohicket! He is a handsome 3-year-old with a big personality and an even bigger love for people. This friendly, outgoing guy is always ready for an adventure or a cuddle with his favorite humans.

Bohicket’s mom recently had to relocate and unfortunately the new living situation hasn’t been the right fit for him. Long daily commutes mean Bohicket is spending too much time alone and no longer has the yard he once enjoyed. Although this was a very difficult decision, his mom wants to make sure Bohicket can have the companionship, activity, and attention he deserves. This social butterfly gets along wonderfully with dogs, kids, and even cats. Bohicket adores people and thrives on interaction, making him a great fit for an active family.

Bohicket is an adventurous boy who enjoys walks, outdoor activities, and even kayaking. If there’s fun to be had, Bohicket wants to be part of it! His house training is still a bit of a work in progress. Bohicket understands that he should go outside, but he sometimes thinks the bathroom is an acceptable backup plan.

With consistency and a stable routine—especially a home where he isn’t left alone for long hours—he should continue to improve. Bohicket would do best in a home where he gets plenty of companionship and activity, and ideally a yard where he can safely explore. In return, you’ll get a cheerful, affectionate hound who is always ready to make you smile.

Meet Otis, an 8-year-old senior basset who was surrendered when his family faced illness and could no longer be home as much. Wanting the very best for him, they made the loving decision to place him in our care.

Otis is truly the perfect gentleman. He has a wonderfully sweet personality and gets along beautifully with other dogs. In fact, he needs another dog in his forever home—he really enjoys the company of other pups, including younger dogs and even puppies.

His foster dad has discovered that Otis is quite capable of a little counter surfing from time to time. One thing we’ve also learned: Otis will need a secure, fenced-in yard. He has a curious streak and loves to “expand his horizons,” occasionally exploring beyond where he should. We think it’s mostly for the fun of it, but safety is key for this sweet explorer. Otherwise, Otis is incredibly loving, easygoing, and just an all-around wonderful basset. We honestly can’t believe he hasn’t found his forever home yet. Whoever adopts him will be getting a truly amazing companion.

Meet Bernie!

Bernie is 8 years young and ready to start the next chapter of his life. His former family made the difficult decision to surrender him due to his resource guarding behaviors and the presence of small children in the home.

This sweet, affectionate boy is just a little confused about all the recent changes in his world, but he’s already showing how much love he has to give. Bernie does best with predictability and personal space. He experiences sleep startle but that’s not to say he doesn’t like snuggling. Sleep startle means he can react when abruptly awakened, so a calm, adult-only home will be the safest match for him.

Bernie would thrive as an only dog, where he can relax without competition over resources. He can get along with cats, but he’s still territorial about his bed, so his new family should be mindful about keeping his resting spaces respected.

He absolutely LOVES running around the yard and playing fetch, and having a safe space to stretch his (little) legs is one of his favorite things—so a fenced-in yard will be important for him.

Bernie’s ideal forever home will be with someone who understands resource guarding and can provide him with structure, patience, and reassurance as he adjusts. With consistency and compassion, Bernie will thrive and show just how loving and loyal he can be.

Meet Gracie & Jasper. Gracie and Jasper are Suncoast Basset Rescue’s newest foster duo, and they are already stealing hearts wherever they go! This sweet bonded pair recently made quite the journey, traveling all the way from Mississippi to Florida to begin their next chapter with SBR.

They came to us with the help of our rescue partners at Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue, who saved them from living outdoors alongside 18 dachshunds. Despite their past, Gracie and Jasper are happy, loving, and incredibly affectionate bassets who are clearly ready to be cherished family members.

Gracie, age 6, and Jasper, age 5, are inseparable and will need to be adopted together.  Gracie is the red & white, Jasper is the tricolor. They adore playing with one another, thrive on human attention, and are happiest when they’re surrounded by people who love them. Their foster mom describes them simply as “AMAZING,” and it’s easy to see why. Both have recently received dental care and are settling in nicely to indoor life and all the comforts that come with it.

Meet Rosie! Rosie is a beautiful 5-year-old girl who brings the perfect balance of playful energy and comfort-loving sweetness. She enjoys a good romp around the backyard just as much as she loves stretching out on a soft, cozy couch afterward. Whether she’s exploring outside or relaxing indoors, Rosie is happiest when she’s near her people.

Rosie came to Suncoast Basset Rescue after her owner’s health began to decline. When he realized that Rosie’s world had grown smaller and she wasn’t getting the activity and attention she deserved, he made the difficult but loving decision to let her have a fresh start. It was not an easy choice, but it was made entirely with Rosie’s best interests at heart.

Now settling into her foster home, Rosie’s days are already looking brighter. She will be heading to the vet soon for a complete wellness exam, updating any of her medical needs and she will need to be spayed. We can’t wait to watch this sweet girl flourish with the love, space, and joy she so deserves.

Meet Memphis. He is the newest member of the Suncoast Basset Rescue family, and at 8½ years old, this sweet boy is ready for a fresh start. Due to life changes in his previous home and a family member developing allergies, Memphis found himself in need of rescue. Sadly, he has been living primarily outdoors and hasn’t received the consistent care and comfort every basset deserves.

At just 35 pounds, Memphis is significantly underweight — his ideal weight is closer to 55 pounds. It’s clear he hasn’t had the support he needed, but that changes now. Memphis will be receiving a full medical evaluation and whatever treatment and nutrition are necessary to help get him into a healthier, more stable place where he can truly enjoy being a beloved companion.

For now, we are giving Memphis time to settle into his foster home, decompress, and feel safe. As we complete his medical evaluations and learn more about his specific needs, we will share updates. Please stay tuned — we look forward to providing more information about Memphis in the near future. 

Meet Lucy. Lucy is a 9-year-old tri-color basset hound who recently found herself in need of a new beginning after her owner passed away. She was his constant companion, and while his family stepped in as best they could, they ultimately reached out to Suncoast Basset Rescue to help Lucy find the loving home she deserves.

Lucy hasn’t had the easiest past few years and appears to have missed out on consistent veterinary care, but that chapter is closing. Lucy will be heading to the vet soon, and once she has been fully evaluated, we’ll have a much clearer picture of her current medical needs and overall health. She’s now on the path to getting the care she needs and a fresh start surrounded by kindness.

This sweet girl is used to living with other dogs and cats and previously had a fenced yard, which will be a must for her future home. Lucy has never learned how to walk on a leash and tends to plant herself when one is put on, so while leash training may come with time and patience, a secure yard is essential.

Lucy is crate trained and finds comfort and security in her crate. She’s a fairly low-energy, mellow girl who enjoys a calm environment, though she still surprises everyone with the occasional zoomies. She’s not much of a barker, only speaking up when strangers arrive. She would do well in a quiet, understanding home that will give her time to decompress, heal, and finally experience the stability she’s been missing.

Meet Finnegan! Finnegan is a 4-year-old, who is ready for a fresh start and the chance to truly be someone’s companion. He came to SBR when his owner realized that a demanding work schedule left Finnegan without the time and attention he deserves. Wanting better for him, he made the loving decision to let SBR help find Finnegan a home where he can thrive. Finnegan is a big, handsome, muscular boy (around 50+ pounds) with plenty of personality to match.

He gets along with other dogs. He can be vocal, but what basset isn’t? He is friendly with people and good with kids, though he does have a habit of jumping up in excitement — he just loves attention and hasn’t yet learned the polite way to ask for it. He has not been around cats

Because Finnegan has not had consistent structure, he is not yet housetrained. He will need patience, consistency, and a committed adopter willing to help him learn the basics. The good news? He is not destructive when left loose in the home. He does, however, get the occasional case of the “zoomies,” and when this big boy gets moving, the furniture may need to brace itself!

Finnegan can be restless and vocal, especially after long stretches without activity. Much of this stems from boredom and a lack of mental and physical stimulation. With regular exercise, enrichment, and clear boundaries, we believe Finnegan will make wonderful progress.

He is a smart dog who simply hasn’t yet had the guidance he needs. He will be heading to the vet to get up to date on all medical care, including neutering and a full wellness check. Once he’s feeling his best and has some structure in place, we expect to see even more of the sweet boy hiding beneath those attention-seeking habits. Finnegan will do best with a patient, committed family who understands that training is a journey and who is willing to invest the time to help him feel secure and confident. In return, you’ll get a loyal, lovable basset who has been waiting his whole life for someone to truly show him the way.

Meet Buddy. Don’t let his good looks and relaxed pose fool you — Buddy is an escape artist! This sweet boy is estimated to be around 3 years old and has a history of coming and going as he pleased on the streets. Buddy was recently rescued with the help of local rescues after he was on his own for about 3 weeks.

Buddy is very friendly and gets along great with other dogs, so he would do best in a home with at least one canine companion. He needs a very secure backyard and a family who can supervise him closely whenever doors are open or he’s outside. With patience, consistency, and some recall training, we hope Buddy will bond fully with his new family and leave his wandering days behind.

For his safety, Buddy currently has a GPS collar and AirTag to help keep track of him in case he tries to explore. We’re looking for someone experienced with dogs, who can give him the guidance and structure he needs to thrive indoors and in his forever home.

Meet Duke. Duke is a 1.5-year-old basset hound who is just beginning to discover what it means to be safe, loved, and cared for. Everything in his world is brand new — collars, leashes, car rides, cozy dog beds, and kind humans — and he’s taking it all in one brave step at a time. Duke came to Suncoast Basset Rescue from a backyard breeding situation where he had very little exposure to normal life experiences

Despite his rough start, Duke has already shown us how much potential he has. He recently went on his first leash walk, took his first car ride, and is now receiving proper veterinary care for the first time in his life. While Duke is understandably shy and overwhelmed, he is incredibly sweet and gentle. At the end of a long, scary day, he chose to curl up on the couch next to his foster mom — a quiet but powerful reminder that he wants connection and is learning to trust. Duke would do best in a calm, patient home with a secure, fenced-in yard where he can explore safely at his own pace.

He would also thrive with another confident dog in the home to help guide him and give him the reassurance he craves. A canine companion will go a long way in building Duke’s confidence and helping him feel secure. With time, consistency, and love, Duke is going to blossom into a wonderful companion. If you’re looking for a sweet soul to grow with, Duke may just be your boy. 

Meet Susie! Susie is a beautiful 4-year-old basset hound with the sweetest soul — and yes, she comes with a little bit of that lovable, typical basset stubbornness too! Despite experiencing a great deal of loss and change in her young life, Susie remains gentle, affectionate, and eager to find the comfort and security of a forever home.

Before coming to Suncoast Basset Rescue, Susie suffered from glaucoma and unfortunately did not receive consistent medical care. Shortly after her arrival, it was clear that her eyes were causing her significant pain and discomfort. With her vision already very limited and no medical options available to preserve what remained, the best and kindest choice was to remove both of her eyes. Susie is now adjusting to life as a blind dog and is doing remarkably well with patience, reassurance, and routine.

Because of her past experiences, Susie is looking for a calm, patient, and loving home where she can feel safe and cherished. We believe she would thrive in a home with another friendly basset who can help show her the ropes and provide her with added confidence and companionship. Susie is especially in need of stability, gentle guidance, and lots of love as she continues to heal and grow.

Meet BB! Just six months old, she comes from the same backyard breeder as Duke, the 1½-year-old boy we recently took in. While her start in life hasn’t included much socialization, we are so grateful she is now safe with SBR and beginning a brand-new chapter.

Like Duke, BB’s transport day was full of big “firsts” — her first collar and leash, her first car ride, and her very first glimpse of a brighter future. It’s clear that the world feels like a pretty scary place to her right now. She is very timid and unsure, but underneath all of that fear we can already see a very sweet, gentle little girl who just needs time, patience, and love

BB will be heading to the vet for a complete wellness exam and will be scheduled to be spayed so we can get her fully on track medically. Emotionally, helping her learn to trust and feel safe may take a little longer — but we are committed to going at her pace and showing her that people can be kind.

Her journey toward confidence starts now, and we can’t wait to watch this precious girl blossom. Welcome to the SBR family, BB — your brighter path begins today.

Meet Lloyd and Darla. These two sweet, adorable 5-year-old bassets came to SBR after their family suffered a devastating house fire and could no longer care for them. Despite all that they have been through, they seem like very loving, well-balanced dogs who are truly appreciative of the consistent attention they are now getting.

Lloyd and Darla are a bonded pair who rely on each other for comfort. They’re currently receiving medical care, especially Lloyd, and both need to put on some healthy weight. Despite everything, their basset mischief still shines through — they’ve already done a little counter surfing to show us their personality!

They love exploring the backyard, hanging out together, and soaking up the sunshine. As they heal physically and emotionally, we’re excited to help them start the next chapter of their lives.

Darla is a tricolor with the black head and freckles. Lloyd is a tricolor with the brown head. 

Meet Daisy!  Daisy is a beautiful 4-year-old basset hound who is finally getting the chance to experience the life every dog deserves. Before coming to Suncoast Basset Rescue five months ago, Daisy spent her early years as a breeder female. Her world was very limited, and she missed out on the love, attention, and positive human interactions that most dogs enjoy. Despite her past, Daisy is incredibly sweet and gentle.

She may be a little shy at first and needs time to build trust, but once she feels safe, her loving personality truly shines. Since arriving at SBR, Daisy has made wonderful progress in her recovery and care — she has been treated for ear infections and skin issues, had surgery to correct two cherry eyes, and has been spayed. Unfortunately, Daisy’s cherry eye surgery did not hold and the cherry eyes have returned.

At this time, we do not want to put her through another surgery, and they do not affect her happy, comfortable daily life. Daisy will do best in a home with a fenced yard where she can safely explore and relax, and with another friendly dog to help boost her confidence and show her the ropes.

She does wonderfully with children as well, as their gentle and non-threatening energy seems to put her at ease. What Daisy needs most is a family willing to offer patience, kindness, and unconditional love as she continues to learn that the world can be a safe and happy place. If you’re looking for a sweet soul to love and nurture, Daisy may be the perfect match for you.
