GIVING TUESDAY
SBR spotted a female basset on the Lee County Animal Services website on August 20 and immediately offered to pull her if no owner stepped forward. On August 23, we got word that "no one ever came into reclaim A1030826. She is blind, malnourished, and has a small mass on the side of her abdomen." Volunteer Dana Williams swung into action and sprung her that same day. Dana, a musician, named her Cecilia ("CeCe" for short); Caecilia means "blind" in Latin, and Saint Cecilia is also is the patron saint of music!
Things were not looking good for CeCe when she left the shelter. Her eyes were completely shut, she was suffering from melting corneas, and she was at risk of losing her sight completely.
After several vet visits (and some hefty vet bills), CeCe's eyes began to clear up and her situation has much improved! Her vision isn't perfect due to irreversible damage, but she does have some sight around the periphery.
Thanks to lots of attentive care her skin issues are under control, and she is finally free of worms. We also nursed her through two bouts of kennel cough! Her spay was thankfully uneventful.
While things are looking much better for CeCe, we are closely monitoring the mass on her side and she still needs extensive dental work that will entail the removal of several rotten teeth. Until her medical issues are resolved, CeCe remains in foster care and SBR continues to cover all of her medical expenses. After her recuperative stay with Dana, CeCe now lives with a foster-to -adopt family who loves her dearly.
This Giving Tuesday we hope you'll consider donating to Suncoast Basset Rescue so we can continue to rescue and rehome any Florida basset in need, regardless of their medical condition.
Currently, SBR takes in an average of two bassets every week, with almost every one of these dogs requiring medical care. Today we are highlighting CeCe's story, but there are many more like hers.
A generous donor has offered to match the first $2,000 raised now through Giving Tuesday, so your donation goes twice as far to help the hounds!
