Shelby

Shelby is an 8-year-old sweetheart who has faced more than her fair share of hardships. For most of her life, Shelby lived outdoors, tethered and without proper medical care. When she came to us, she was covered in fleas, but since then she’s begun her journey of adjusting to life indoors—learning what it truly means to feel safe, loved, and cared for.

Shelby is heartworm positive and is currently undergoing treatment using the slow-kill method. Recently, she was also diagnosed with a rectal adenoma that has been determined to be cancerous and inoperable. While this news is heartbreaking, Shelby is now a Forever Foster with Suncoast Basset Rescue. This means she will remain in the loving care of her foster home, with the rescue providing for her medical needs, while we focus on keeping her comfortable, happy, and surrounded by love for the rest of her days.

Despite everything she’s been through, Shelby remains an incredibly sweet and loving dog who craves companionship. She does have some anxiety when left alone, but she’s in excellent hands in a very experienced foster home, where she always has the company of a large, loving pack of fellow bassets.

Shelby is the definition of a “velcro dog,” forming a deep bond with her foster dad, who is patiently helping her build confidence and trust—though he may never go to the bathroom alone again! Each day, Shelby is learning that she will never be abandoned again. While her journey may not be easy, it is now filled with comfort, security, and the love she has always deserved.
